Solensia (frunevetmab) is a monoclonal antibody (mABs) treatment from Zoetis, designed to help manage pain in cats diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA).
Product leaflet (US, due to being the most comprehensive) is attached to the "Downloads" section below.
Solensia targets NGF (nerve growth factor) that transmits the pain to the brain. Once Solensia has bound to NGF, it prevents it from attaching to its receptors on nerve cells and interrupts the transmission of pain signals. It does not treat osteoarthritis, just removes the pain.
β οΈ As Zoetis' CEO admitted during one of the interviews, Solensia had been tested for 3 months only, ergo the consequences of its long-term usage are officially unknown.
β οΈ During that interview, it was also stated that Solensia must not be given to cats with existing neurological disorders.
NGF is not only involved in pain signaling, it is also very important for the growth, maintenance, and survival of nerve cells in the central and peripheral nervous system. It regulates the growth and differentiation of B-lymphocytes, and the maturation of T cells in face of infection, so it has an important role in regulation of your catβs immune system. It is involved in the maintenance and survival of pancreatic beta cells (insulin production), and much more...
The list of side effects is long, including (but not limited to):
- Skin issues: scabs, fur loss, itching;
- Gastrointestinal issues: vomiting, diarrhea, blood in stool;
- Neurological disorders: seizures, twitches, hear loss, loss of vision, ataxia (losing balance), cats paralyzed;
- Cancer;
- Kidney/liver/pancreas/multi-organ failure;
- Death.
FDA list of all reported side effects (from Jan 2022 through Jun 2024), as well as the product leaflet (US, due to being the most comprehensive) are attached to the "Downloads" section below.
β οΈ Given the number and scale of its side effects, Solensia should be your (very) last resort, not first! When you have explored all alternative OA treatment available (see below) and nothing has worked for your cat, meaning that you are in a "do or die" situation - that would be the time to eventually consider Solensia...
Sometimes that happens straight away, other times - after months of usage. It depends on few factors: potential existing health conditions, potential existing medication, as well as the level of your catβs NGF. The latter vary from one cat to another, meaning that if one cat has more NGF than the other, then the side effects for that cat will not occur straight away, but after few months of continuous injections.
Stop further injections, as they will only aggravate the situation. Contact your vet as soon as possible!
In most cases, Lions Mane or glucocorticoids (e.g., prednisolone) may help, as they tend to increase NGF, ergo minimize the side effects.
In cats with naturally-occurring OA, frunevetmab's half-life was established at 10-12 days.
To help you determine an approximate date of when would Solensia be out of your cat's system, we have created Solensia half-life calculator, which you can download from the "Downloads" section below.
Yes, there are plenty. From YuMove (or other green lipped mussel supplements), through Lions Mane, CBD oils (for cats, not humans; human ones contain terpenes, some if which are toxic to cats), Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), cordyceps, Cosequin, cold lasers (e.g., HelioPet), acupuncture.
Full guide on all of the above is coming soon...
β οΈ Please refrain from buying unknown devices with "cold laser" on the box from Amazon/eBay, unless they are classified as medical device, CE/UKCA certified π¬π§, and registered with MHRA π¬π§ (or certified accordingly to your country's regulations for medical devices and registered with the Authorities).
You should report any side effects to Zoetis and Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) π¬π§ (or your country's Authorities). You can also add a story on "Solensia Killed my Cat... Solensia - Class Action" Facebook group - to warn other cat owners, and/or send us an email at help@lfpcsa.co.uk. Finally, you can register your interest in participation in the class action against Zoetis in UK.
